Sumo Shows in Tokyo

Shinjuku Sumo Club or Another Tokyo Sumo Show?

One company runs the main Shinjuku room, a second room by Kabukicho and a third by Yoyogi Station, all with the same format. What changes is the address, the size of the room and what comes with the ticket.

The three rooms below belong to the same operator, Mediabound, which trades as Traveling Japan and sells on GetYourGuide as Traveling Tokyo. Each runs the same kind of show: an English-speaking MC, demonstrations, real bouts, a lottery for the sumo challenge and a photo with the wrestlers.

"This sumo show was extremely fun and very educational, thanks to both the wrestlers and Dai the moderator! Pictures with the wrestlers are included and if you're lucky you even get to challenge them"

Tobias Germany

"We went to 10am show with Ju and John, they were great hosts and the show was a great mix of being informative and entertaining. It was a good length for a family with children( 8 and 10 years old)"

Anjana Australia

"Warm friendly welcome on arrival and drinks order taken before being shown to our seats. Our two Sumo wrestlers were introduced by our host and their background info given and a brief history of Sumo. They then engaged in wrestling matches and we were encouraged to cheer along. If your raffle number was drawn you could participate against them whilst wearing an inflatable sumo suit! Our wrestlers were very entertaining and the whole event was well organised and great fun."

Jackie United Kingdom

"We absolutely loved the Shinjuku Sumo show experience! It was informative, funny, and an all around great experience! Our 10 year old thought it was interesting and hilarious! The perfect first sumo experience for our family! The host Shane could not have been better! He was easy to understand and really engaging!"

Sarah United States

"The Shinjuku Sumo show was educational - we now understand what it's all about, including what it takes to be a sumo wrestler. It was also entertaining, especially when audience members challenged the wrestlers."

Robert United States

"This was an incredible experience from start to finish! The location was easy to find, and everyone was kind and helpful talking us through tickets and seating. Theo was an amazing host, really fun and enthusiastic and full of knowledge. Both sumo wrestlers were fantastic! Really funny and put on a really great show!"

Sophie United Kingdom

"Fantastic show and so entertaining! I learned a lot about sumo and the MC Izzy did a great job describing the rules and history. My daughter turned 10 and happened to be randomly picked to fight the sumo wrestler making it extra special and she received a special gift banner souvenir for her victory. The wrestlers were great and it was a highlight of our Tokyo vacation."

The Shinjuku sumo show is a live show by former professional sumo wrestlers at the Shinjuku Sumo Club(新宿相撲部屋), a second-floor room for up to 100 guests at 2-5-22 Okubo, Shinjuku-ku, 280 m on foot from exit B3 of Higashi-Shinjuku Station. An English-speaking MC explains the sport while the wrestlers demonstrate it, they fight real bouts, up to six guests drawn by lottery wrestle them in costume, and everyone gets a photo with the wrestlers at the end. Where the Shinjuku Sumo Club is

Map of the Shinjuku Sumo Club at the Sekisaku Building 2F, Okubo 2-5-22, with Higashi-Shinjuku, Shin-Okubo, Seibu-Shinjuku and Shinjuku stations, the JR Yamanote Line and the Kabukicho district
The Shinjuku Sumo Club in Okubo, north-east of Kabukicho, beside Higashi-Shinjuku Station.

The club is not at Shinjuku Station. It sits in Okubo, the neighbourhood north-east of Kabukicho: in a straight line, 1.5 km north-east of the Central East Exit of JR Shinjuku Station, and 200 m from the nearest exits of Higashi-Shinjuku Station.

The address is 2-5-22 Okubo, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 169-0072, on the second floor (2F) of the Sekisaku Building. Written in Japanese for a taxi driver or a map app: 東京都新宿区大久保2-5-22 セキサクビル2階. There is one rule for the door: entry is only through the front of the building, the main door next to Daiso, not by a side entrance.

  • From Higashi-Shinjuku Station (Toei Oedo Line, Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line): 280 m on foot from exit B3, about 4 minutes. This is the shortest walk.
  • From Shin-Okubo Station (JR Yamanote Line): 850 m on foot, about 11 minutes.
  • From Shinjuku Station: 1.8 km on foot from the JR Central East Exit, about 24 minutes, through Kabukicho; or one stop on the Oedo Line to Higashi-Shinjuku.
  • From Seibu-Shinjuku Station: 1.5 km on foot, about 20 minutes.

The show runs to a time schedule, and the front desk may not accept late entry. Give yourself a few minutes to find the door and climb to the second floor before the start time on your ticket.

What the 90 minutes hold

The club builds the show in four parts. For about 40 minutes the MC walks through the history, rules and rituals of sumo, and the wrestlers demonstrate each element as it is explained. Then about 20 minutes of bouts, fought on the ring a few metres from the front row. Then about 30 minutes in which guests take part. The show ends with a photo session with the wrestlers.

A photo from the listing of the Shinjuku show.

The club’s programme and the GetYourGuide ticket agree on the length: about 90 minutes, 1 hour 30 minutes on the listing. The whole show is in English; Japanese commentary is possible at some venues and times.

It is an entertainment show, not an official tournament. The wrestlers are former professionals and the bouts are real sumo, but nothing is ranked or recorded. Tokyo’s Grand Sumo Tournaments are held at Ryogoku Kokugikan in January, May and September; if your trip falls in one of those months, the tournament is a different, much larger day out, and this show is the shorter, explained version you can see in any month.

Drinks, food and paying

The ticket includes a welcome drink, a bottle of water. Other drinks are not included and are sold at the club. The event is cashless: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover are accepted, so bring a card rather than yen notes.

No meal comes with the Shinjuku show. The operator serves chanko nabe, the hot pot sumo wrestlers eat, only at the lunch and dinner shows of its room by Yoyogi Station. Eat before or after: Okubo and Kabukicho are full of restaurants on the walk back to Shinjuku Station.

The sumo challenge and the photo

The part most guests remember is the challenge. Up to six guests a show take part, drawn by lottery; those picked put on a sumo costume and step into the ring against a wrestler. Not everyone who wants to wrestle will get to, and the ticket cannot guarantee it.

Everyone gets the photo at the end. Photos are welcome throughout the show and personal video is allowed unless the MC announces otherwise, so a phone is all you need.

Who the show suits

  • Families: the operator runs it as a show for all ages, and children can volunteer for the challenge.
  • First-time visitors to Japan: the commentary is the point. You leave knowing why the wrestlers throw salt, stamp and crouch before a bout, which makes a tournament broadcast or a stable visit far easier to follow later.
  • Wheelchair users: the room is on the second floor. Guests with access needs should contact the operator before booking; it explains the arrangements at each venue.
  • Not for you if you want a meal with the show, or a seat at a ranked tournament.

The club’s own price and the ticket here

The operator’s Tokyo page lists its Shinjuku, Kabukicho and Shibuya rooms from ¥10,000 per person including tax, while its brand page shows a lower figure, from ¥5,000 tax included, varying by venue and day (both read November 2026); its booking calendar gives the price for your date. The ticket on this page is per person from US$49 in current promotion (usually US$70), checked November 2026, with a bottle of water and no meal, and it allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before and booking now with payment later. Compare the two prices for your date, since both change by day.

The club takes up to 100 guests a show, and most shows sell out, above all at weekends and in busy travel periods, so book a few days ahead. Pick your date in the calendar to see that day’s show times.
